Photoshoot Prep 101: Preparing for Your Picture-Perfect Moment

12/7/2016

As the day of your photoshoot approaches, you might feel a mix of excitement and jitters. And while your photographer will work magic with their lens, there are steps you can take to ensure you shine even brighter on camera. Here's a comprehensive guide to getting photoshoot-ready.

1. Skincare Regime
  • Start Early: About a week before your shoot, be more diligent about your skincare routine. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize daily.
  • Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate your skin 2-3 times during the week leading up to the shoot to shed dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water. Hydrated skin has a natural glow that even the best makeup can't replicate.
  • Avoid Experimenting: Now's not the time to try out new skincare products. Stick to what you know to avoid unexpected breakouts.

2. Hair Care
  • Trim and Touch-up: If you're due for a trim or color touch-up, schedule it a few days before the shoot.
  • Deep Conditioning: A deep conditioning treatment can give your locks extra shine and smoothness.

3. Diet and Sleep
  • Avoid Salty Foods: Salty foods can lead to water retention and puffiness. Opt for fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.
  • Get Ample Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep, especially the night before your shoot. Well-rested individuals look refreshed and have brighter eyes.

4. Wardrobe and Accessories
  • Plan Ahead: Decide on your outfits a few days prior. Consider multiple options and consult with your photographer if you're unsure.
  • Accessorize: Lay out accessories for each outfit. Remember, sometimes less is more. Choose pieces that enhance your attire without overshadowing it.

5. Day-Before Checklist
  • Nails: Ensure your nails are neat. Even if you aren’t planning close-up shots, well-groomed hands make a difference.
  • Pack a Bag: Bring along essentials: a makeup touch-up kit, a hairbrush, and perhaps a second pair of shoes or a different accessory option.

6. On the Day

  • Stay Calm and Relaxed: The more relaxed you are, the better the photos. If you’re tense, it will show. Listen to soothing music, meditate, or do some light stretching.
  • Arrive Fresh-faced: Unless you're doing your own makeup, arrive with a clean, moisturized face. This gives your makeup artist a perfect canvas.
  • Communicate: Before the shoot begins, chat with your photographer. Discuss any last-minute changes or preferences. It's your day to shine, and open communication ensures everyone’s on the same page.

In conclusion, while great photography plays a significant role in a successful photoshoot, the preparation leading up to it can dramatically enhance the results. By investing a little time and effort in the days preceding your session, you can ensure that your photos capture you at your absolute best.
